Ken – People make money in network marketing when the treat it as a business. Legitimate network marketing will always focus on a product.

Product is crucial. People aren’t going to change their buying habits unless there’s something SIGNIFICANT in it for them. I don’t care how great you tell me your shampoo is, I’m not paying $26 for a bottle of shampoo. I have a perceived value in my mind of what shampoo cost and you’re just not going to be able to convince me otherwise.

However, there is an exception to this. If my hair were falling out and that particular shampoo reversed the hair loss and gave me healthy, luxurious locks. THEN, I would be stocking up on that shampoo.

The key is to represent a product that rises above objections of perceived value.

The problem with many network marketing companies is they fail at this crucial point. They fail to focus on product. And they fail to focus on the benefits to the consumer. When this happens, the entire industry gets a bad reputation.

I’m sure you’ve heard that the majority of people who get involved don’t make any money at all. That only the people at the top make any real money. That if you have to pay money to get involved it’s a scam. Let’s examine those claims.

1. The majority of people who get involved don’t make any money. This is absolutely true. Search any mlm and you will see that upwards of 90% of the people who get into the business make virtually nothing, and, in fact, lose money. BUT consider this: 90% of ALL businesses fail. That’s ALL businesses, across ALL industries. Statistically, the majority of all businesses started, FAIL within the first two years. Does that mean the restaurant business is a scam? That the clothing business is a scam? That getting your real estate license is a scam? That the woman who started the coffee shop in your neighborhood and closed after a year was scammed? No. It just means that, for whatever reason, a business venture was not successful. People have to take responsibility for their failures and move on.

2. Only the people at the top make money. To this I say, so? Take a look at corporate America. You have your workers, managers, senior managers, regional managers, division vps, and so on. The worker level is plentiful and they make the least amount of money. The executives sit alone at the top raking in the dough. Is that not the structure of a pyramid? It doesn’t matter how many hours the worker puts in, how much effort he puts in to bettering himself, he’s NEVER going to make more money than the executive. In network marketing, you can surpass the income of the person who brought you into the company. You can surpass the income of your management. Your success depends entirely on your efforts. If you don’t like being at the bottom, you can do something about it. Leverage your time. Delegate and build a team of people who share your vision.

3. If you have to pay money to get involved, it’s a scam. Absolutely false. It’s a business and all businesses require some level of investment. Example:

I have a distributorship for a greeting card and gifting business. My company sells an online software license that allows people to choose cards from a catalog, create a card from a template, or create a card entirely from scratch using their photos, their text, even their own handwriting. Then, my company prints the card and mails the card for the customer, for about a 1/3 less than what they could buy in the store. And if the client chooses, they can include a gift with the card. It saves people time, it saves money and it allows complete personalization. For me to get involved with this business, it cost me $466. I was given:
* a phenomenal product
* the opportunity to work from home
* superior training
* customer service support team
* a production and distribution center that handles the product
* no inventory
* no deliveries
* no payroll
* no rent
* no stocking
* no bookkeeping

Now, if I wanted to do the same thing with a "real business", say a Hallmark Crown Store. This is what it would take (according to the Hallmark franchise information page):
* minimum networth of $500,000
* liquid assets of $120,000
* working capital of $50,000 to $80,000
* access to financing of $133,000 to $280,000
* college degree preferred with 5 to 10 years sales management experience
* Lengthy process of interviews
* Review of 3 year business plan
* location to be determined by Hallmark
* knowledge of merchandising, inventory, business financials and customer service training

As a Hallmark franchise owner, you DO EVERYTHING, you are EVERYONE. If your employees don’t show, you’re on call.

Ken, People make money in network marketing when they stop making excuses and realize it is business. But, when people don’t do their homework and sign up with just any ol’ company, they’re not business investors, they’re gamblers. And that’s an entirely different subject.
